January 2003

Two years ago, my neighbor's sister died suddenly, leaving behind a huge box of strips of fabric. I accepted the box, despite not liking the colors or choices of fabric, figuring I'd someday find a use for it. When my neighbor became pregnant at age 40, I decided a baby quilt made of her sister's fabrics would be fitting. The look on Susan's face as she opened the box at the shower and recognized the fabrics, made us both cry, as if her sister had commissioned this special quilt for the new baby. I added my first experiment in free motion embroidery to pieces left over from the quilt.
